Our History
In 1999, after 5 years of teaching 7th and 11th graders history and English, Steve & his wife Renee packed everything they owned into a U-Haul truck and moved to Birmingham, Alabama so that Steve could begin working in financial services. In the months after 9/11, Steve, Renee and a six-month old baby named Grace moved back to Michigan to start GEM Asset Management, LLC. The initials G.E.M. are a tribute to Steve’s grandfather, George Edward Miesel, who was a successful Detroit area business leader and an inspiration to all who knew him.
A couple of years later, Steve’s friend from college, Tim Story, joined GEM as a partner. After the first few years, they realized that their business had grown from servicing just family and friends to include a wider variety of clientele all from different cities, stages of life, and communities. This was when the business started to evolve into what GEM looks like today – a place where the goal is to bring the highest value to service the clients’ individual needs. Today, GEM serves about 400 clients and is a team of 7 people.
